Workshops in Perth for Sole Traders & Hobbyists

Starting in July 2016, I will be running a series of Build Your Own Website workshops.

IDEAL FOR:
SOLE TRADERS & HOBBYISTS
There are lots of options for creating a FREE website, most of them minus the major must haves recommended by the peeps in the know.
Must have #1: It’s important to have your own domain name. If your website has an address like www.myfabbusiness.wix.com.au, it will look unprofessional and be difficult for people to find. Your own domain www.myfabbusiness.com.au can be yours for as little as $10 a year.
Must have #2: SEO is a big deal. Sites created on FREE builders often have terrible SEO. You should care about this because if nobody can find your website on Google, there’s no point in doing it in the first place.
Must have #3: Build your site on a stable framework that can grow with you. FREE builders are often limited in their functionality and may not be around in the future. Wordpress powers 25% of the internet, is stable and has virtually limitless capacity for growth. You can add booking systems, calendars, membership portals and any other kind of usefulness as your empire grows.
Must have #4: Don’t get sucked into anything that involves a monthly fee unless you really need it. WordPress is free to use and almost everything you will need to make it work is free too. You can add a shop, booking system or membership system all for nix except your time. It’s worth spending money on a premium, professional theme with clever tools to make building and maintaining your site a piece of cake.
Most important must have: Content and calls to action, that speak directly to the people you want to sell to. This is one of the hardest things to find help with and this is where I come in.
ONGOING COSTS
Cost is a significant factor for small businesses and there are some costs that apply to any self hosted website:
- Domain name $12.50 per year.
- Web Hosting from $88 per year.
In this workshop, you’ll build a website using a premium WordPress theme that I highly recommend. It’s flexible, it’s fabulous and it will make you feel like an IT genius.
- Theme subscription
- Option 1: $90 per year (or US$69) through Elegant Themes.
- Option 2: $150 one off through me.
AT THE WORKSHOP
We’ll talk about nailing your pitch, responsive design, SEO, website security, backups and email lists.
Your domain and hosting will be ready for you to get stuck right in and put what you’ve prepared, into the right places. You’ll create the structure of your website, insert the content and start formatting until it looks just right. If you’re prepared, you will finish the day with a number of your pages already done and the confidence to do the rest.
After the workshop you’ll be invited to join our closed Facebook group, where you’ll be able to ask questions, share successes and get help from me and other workshop graduates.
BEFORE THE WORKSHOP
I’ll ask you to book online through my shop and pay the non-refundable course fee to secure your place. Once you’ve done that I’ll email you the worksheets to help you prepare.
The week before the course, I’ll check on your progress with your homework, register your domain name, hosting and theme subscription and confirm the date, time and address so that you know where to come.
On the day of the workshop, all that’s left to do is to put your lucky socks and knickers on and get ready to create your masterpiece.

There is a limit to what we can cover in one day. This workshop isn’t designed to equip you to snag the top job at Google, it’s meant to help you become self sufficient by learning what you need to know, to create and manage a simple website yourself. It will teach you where to find the tools and information you will need to continue educating yourself on the exciting journey of marketing your business.
Your domain name, hosting and theme will be bought directly from the supplier for you and registered in your name. When the time comes to renew, they will contact you directly and you’ll know what to do.
